A cycling route starting in Long Island City, New York, United States of America.

Overview

About this route

I got a new bike, and was looking for a way to get to Fort Tilden Beach. There weren't any (protected) bike path that went direct south through Queens and Brooklyn, so I looked at the NYC Bike map for viable bike routes, and just headed south. There are a bunch of mistakes along the way as I missed a few key streets and had to adjust the route. I added some notes along the way explaining some stuff.  the route is 25 miles.  maybe next time i shouldn't do that much on my first ride. gonna feel this tomorrow.

Starting from Jackson Heights, south along side streets, through Forest Park, eventually ending up on the Jamaica Bay Greenway.  Travel along the greenway with a quick stop at Carnarsie Pier, and also Floyd Bennett Field, and Fort Tilden.

Points of interest along the route

  1. Point of interest after 4 km

I was planning on heading east along Eliot Ave, and south along Fresh Pond Road. unfortunately I completely missed Eliot Ave, and it's too far to backtrack. so might as well continue south.

  2. Point of interest after 4 km

CAUTION: Metropolitan Avenue is a two-way, two land, narrow street with no room for bicycles. detour around using another street.

  3. Point of interest after 6.4 km

there's a change in elevation as east bound traffic goes down a small hill.

  4. Point of interest after 7.7 km

Pitstop: Forest Park with shaded benches.

  5. Point of interest after 7.7 km

    underpass

  6. Point of interest after 7.9 km

    Golf course

  7. Point of interest after 10.7 km

I had to walk my bike across a crosswalk to put myself in a good position for further travel south. it's a big intersection.

  8. Point of interest after 11.3 km

ok, 80th street here goes in the opposite direction, so let me try 79th st instead.

  9. Point of interest after 12 km

CAUTION: the nyc bike map mentions there is a potential future bicycle path here. figured there was some rudimentary path at least. nada, it's just a huge swath of grass flanked by highway traffic. there's no crosswalk here. I decided to wait until there was no traffic before i crossed.

  10. Point of interest after 14 km

Finally made it. Jamaica Bay Greenway bike and ped path. protected. the ride is pretty lonely and boring, once you're on it, there's no exit until Carnarsie Pier.

  11. Point of interest after 14.1 km

Whoops! missed the bike path, turn around

  12. Point of interest after 19.5 km

Canarsie Pier. there are benches here.

  13. Point of interest after 20.2 km

did I mention this was my first big ride in decades? I started cramping up here...

  14. Point of interest after 22.8 km

Narrow sidewalk over bridge, signs say to walk bicycle.

  15. Point of interest after 29.4 km

nypd cars in a fenced in lot.

  16. Point of interest after 30.3 km

Floyd Bennett Field, I haven't been here before.

  17. Point of interest after 31.2 km

the path continues on the other side of the road. wait for the light, use the crosswalk.

  18. Point of interest after 31.6 km

path narrows, and signs tell you that riding bicycles are prohibited on the bridge. nobody pays attention. there's barely enough room to fit two bicycles.

  19. Point of interest after 33.4 km

    Fort Tilden

  20. Point of interest after 33.8 km

art colony. i was looking for water.

  21. Point of interest after 34.1 km

    bathrooms

  22. Point of interest after 34.4 km

Breezy Dogs food truck. good frozen arnold palmer (lemonade ice tea) with chopped up lemon rind in it.

  23. Point of interest after 35.1 km

Jacob Riis Park. too many people on the boardwalk not paying attention.

  24. Point of interest after 35.4 km

there's a small shaded path here leading to a golf course. good place for 1-2 people to seek shade for a few minutes to finish off my frozen arnold palmer drink brought earlier.

  25. Point of interest after 37.6 km

    I cramped up bad here.

  26. Point of interest after 38.9 km

tried to deal with the cramping, took a quick break to see if the shade spot at this location was there. it was not.
