The King’s stage of the Odyssey of the Oryx takes off from Rehoboth, home of the Basters, an ethnic group descended from Dutch settlers and indigenous African women. The first 84 kilometers take the riders north along the unpaved D1237 and C26 roads. This desolate area is mostly uphill, but won’t trouble the non-climbers for the most part. After a short dip towards Windhoek, on paved roads nonetheless, the peloton takes a tour through the capital of Namibia.
The riders will then jostle for position in the Cimbebasia suburb to begin the final climb of the Odyssey towards Großherzog-Friedrich-Berg. The final five unpaved kilometers have an average gradient of 8%, with stretches far steeper than that. The radio station on top of the mountain marks the finish of the Tour, where the strongest climber will be first to reach the line.
