An der Elbe zwischen Sachsen und Brandenburg

Beautiful route for a summer countryside outing along the Elbe southeast of Torgau. The route consists of sections of field paths, lightly trafficked country roads, and cycle paths. The roads are cobbled in places – you can occasionally feel the jolts of history. Along the route there are quaint farming and manor villages where time sometimes seems to have stood still. Highlights of the route are the sections directly on the Elbe. A great, (still?!) natural river with remnants of the original floodplain forest. Martinskirchen with its baroque palace. Then via Mühlberg/Elbe with the Church of Our Lady, Marienstern Monastery, Renaissance palace, and new Elbe bridge. West of the Elbe then returning via Belgern with Renaissance town hall, monastery ruins, an interesting town church with farmer baroque additions. Crossing back over the Elbe is done by cable ferry.
