About this route

The second stage (59 km) of the 265-kilometre multi-day tour along the rivers of the Rhön-Franconian region.

From Bad Kissingen to Bad Neustadt, narrow valleys alternate with broad valley basins. Aschach Castle majestically sits on a rocky spur. Visiting it allows you to simultaneously explore three museums. Aschach belongs to the Biedermeier spa town of Bocklet, whose romantic spa park invites you to linger. With Bad Neustadt, you reach a region rich in history. Somewhere in the Neustadt basin stood the legendary Pfalz Salz of Charlemagne, now unfortunately lost. However, Pfalz Salz was several times the residence of Charlemagne, who developed 'great diplomacy' there and even received envoys from the Orient. Its sturdy successor, the mighty Ganerbenburg Salzburg castle, towers on a hill above Bad Neuhaus, whose incorporation into Neustadt brought the town prestige. Near Salzburg, along with numerous clinic buildings, you find the 'germ cell' of the well-known Rhönklinikum hospital. The route leads you right through Bad Neustadt and encourages a rest on the lively market square. The path continues uphill in the valley of the Franconian Saale. Until Bad Königshofen, you will never lose sight of the river. But there, in the former fortress town of the Würzburg prince-bishops, it is time to say goodbye. Bad Königshofen is located in the Grabfeld region near the Haßberge hills. The Grabfeld landscape dates back to an early Frankish district (gau), but the name probably comes from Celtic and means something like 'beech land'. Due to fertile soils, the land around Bad Königshofen was already relatively densely populated during Celtic times. Relics from this time can be found in the Schranne Museum, which also houses a section of more recent history with the Border Museum. Anyone wanting to truly relax healthily can do so at the thermal water lake of the Frankentherme spa.

Length: 58.7 km

Elevation gain: 292 m

Duration: 3:30 h

Highest point: 278 m

Start point: Bad Kissingen Ludwigsbrücke

Characteristics: easy to medium multi-day cycling tour mostly on very well rideable paths

Access: by car via the A7, exit Bad Kissingen/Hammelburg or Bad Kissingen/Oberthulba, then follow the road to Bad Kissingen; by train from Gemünden am Main or the Schweinfurt/Erfurt line

Experience value: high (great nature and landscape experience);

Points of interest: Bad Kissingen spa park; museums in Aschach Castle; Bad Neustadt and the Salzburg fortress; Bad Königshofen: Prehistoric Museum and Border Museum in the Schranne, thermal water lake

Signposting: The route is marked with white-green signposts showing destinations and distances

Literature: Jochen Heinke 'By Bicycle and Luggage from the Main to the Rhön' Parzellers Buchverlag Fulda ISBN 978-3-7900-0393-2; Fritsch cycling map Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve Rhön ISBN3-86116-568-6
