Grenzübergang Meinigen - Hoher Kasten

From the border crossing at Meinigen, the route leads over Oberriet towards Kobelwald. The road continues through Kobelwald until reaching a cozy tavern. There, the road surface changes to gravel. Continuing on, you pass by several Alps and huts. The road is paved again after a few hundred meters. Towards the end, there are some very steep sections with up to 20% gradients. Upon reaching the mountain ridge, the summit is already in sight. Those who wish can ride along the ridge for a few meters and then complete the last meters to the summit on foot. A spectacular view of the Rhine Valley unfolds, and on the opposite side, one looks directly at the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.

For the descent, the same route can be chosen or you can veer right just before the tavern onto the paved Brunnenberg street. This leads you in steep serpentines directly to Rüthi, from where the starting point is easily accessible along the Rhine dam.
