Runde um den gesamten Truppenübungsplatz Hohenfels

The starting point of the circular tour is exemplarily chosen at the main gate of the training area near Hohenfels / Großbissendorf, but an entrance / access can of course also be made from any other place.

The tour primarily runs on quiet secondary roads and bike paths. The majority of the road surface is asphalt, but there are also (good) gravel sections. With a touring / trekking bike and probably also with a gravel bike, the tour can be easily ridden. Due to the gravel content, it is not recommended for racing bikes - alternatively, one can deviate to the mostly nearby road (which runs parallel in the Lauterachtal valley and also in Vilstal).

This tour also includes a part of the idyllic Lauterachtal cycling path, which we encounter shortly after Utzenhofen-Mühlhausen. A section of the Oberpfälzer Vilstal cycling path or the 5-Rivers cycling path will also be ridden from Schmidmühlen to Rohrbach.

Route description:

Hohenfels -> Großbissendorf -> Hörmannsdorf -> Freudenricht -> St Colomann -> Reichertswinn -> Prönsdorf -> Utzenhofen -> Mühlhausen -> Hohenburg -> Adertshausen -> Schmidmühlen -> Rohrbach -> Hohenfels

Notes:

West of the training area (especially the section from Hörmannsdorf to Utzenhofen), you move on the Jura heights mostly between 500 and 600 m, where a strong, fresh westerly wind often blows. It is advisable to carry a windbreaker or similar with you.

The route passes through several flora and fauna habitats (e.g. Lauterachtal, Vils, training area Hohenfels) or brushes against them. Please show appropriate consideration and stay on the marked paths, avoid unnecessary noise, keep your dogs on a leash, and do not leave any litter ... But this should be self-evident everywhere, not just in habitats and protected areas. ;-)

Near St. Colomann / close to Velburg is the König-Otto stalactite cave - one of the most beautiful stalactite caves in Germany. Attached is an adventure world with a high ropes course, forest adventure path, and forest beer garden - definitely worth a detour if you have enough time!
