Karkogel - Gsengalmhütte + Extrarunde

The tour in this case begins in Abtenau at the Gasthaus Traunstein and initially follows about 1 km on the main road to Fischbach. There we turn right and follow the MTB tour 'Kargogel Route 07', which is very well signposted, from here ascending the Kargogel. The road turns into a forest trail after just a few meters, which, according to the Kargogel route, leads to the end of the road just past the Kargogel ski lift top station.

From here, you leave the 'official' tour and continue up the road to the Gsengalmhütte, where it ends definitively. Cycling on this section is allowed according to a sign next to the road from May 1 to October 30 between 08:00 and 19:00.

By the way, there is a great view over Abtenau from the Gsengalmhütte. Unfortunately, at the time of my tour, in mid-May, it was (still) not open, otherwise this would have been a good opportunity to rest a bit and enjoy the view.

The descent is basically the same way back. From the ski lift top station, you can also, as in this case, choose the descent via the toboggan run, which is a bit steeper than the normal forest road but is good to ride.

Once back in the valley, the track leads on the main road through Abtenau towards Voglau down until shortly before Voglau we turn left onto an unassuming path. Here we follow part of the also well-signposted 'Strubberg Route' along a beautiful stream back to Abtenau.
