Pietrapertosa-Grumento

A cycling route starting in Pietrapertosa, Basilicate, Italy.

Overview

About this route

In the heart of Basilicata. This stage will also offer views. Leaving Pietrapertosa towards the woods until the Sella Lata pass. Then descending towards Laurenzana before shortly climbing again towards the eponymous Abetina, and after crossing it, descending in the direction of Viggiano, the richest town in Italy. Welcome to Val d'Agri, the Texas of Italy. The largest oil field in all of Europe, which unfortunately Eni has been exploiting for many years. You will have the chance to pass near the oil center and hear the unsettling noises coming from a true monster, but so be it... Shortly after, you cross the Agri river and reach the destination. I have placed the stage finish near the Parco Verde agriturismo, situated just a few meters from the Grumentum geological park, which is worth a visit. Obviously, it is necessary to check availability for overnight stays in advance. If that is not possible, you can look for something in Sarconi, which is located downstream, otherwise you need to go up to the towns of Grumento Nova or Moliterno. It is advisable to book in advance.
