Obing - Rott am Inn
A cycling route starting in Obing, Bavaria, Germany.
Overview
About this route
Rott am Inn is located halfway between Rosenheim and Wasserburg am Inn, on the edge of the Inn glacier. Visible high above the valley are the uneven towers of the former Benedictine abbey. Where the Romanesque basilica of the Rott Benedictine monastery from the 11th century once stood, now the spire of the Rococo church of St. Marinus and Anianus, dating from 1763, rises into the sky. Inside the sacred building, you can admire the work of the sculptor and Rococo master Ignaz Günther. At the Rott cemetery, the grave of the former Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauß can be visited. Informative is the secularization path, laid out in the front garden of the municipal house, which tells of the development of the monastery and the village. Worth seeing are also the Rott axis and the historic refrigeration machine from the Linde company dating from 1904. The four-ton machine was used for cooling and producing bar ice and today reminds of the brewing tradition in Rott. The massive original equipment can be visited at the monastery wall, exhibited in a glass pavilion. The Ausee invites swimming in summer and ice skating in winter. The Rotter Forest, with its wild romantic duck pond, is an ideal hiking area. The community has established four well-marked themed trails for hikers. Skaters, bowling and tennis enthusiasts can also practice their sports in Rott am Inn. In addition, the place is an ideally located start and destination point for excursions to the Upper Bavarian Inn region, which lies between Rosenheim and Wasserburg. Well-known long-distance cycling and hiking trails such as the Mozart Cycle Path, the Inn Cycle Path and the Way of St. James pass by Rott am Inn. Hospitality is highly valued! The picturesque village caters to every culinary taste. The Rotter beer gardens are particularly popular. The Rococo church in Rott am Inn is widely known for its beauty and is one of the most important monastery churches in Bavaria. About this former Benedictine abbey, the Polyglott travel guide raves: 'Rightly, Rott is famous for its monastery church, alongside the Wies Church one of the purest and most precious Rococo buildings in Bavaria.' And in the Kompass Cultural Travel Guide, the church is praised as probably the 'most beautiful church space of the 18th century.' Famous artists of the era have left a lasting monument here. Johann Michael Fischer created the architecture, Ignaz Günther the high altar and sculptures, his namesake Matthäus the ceiling frescoes. Also involved were Josef Götsch (sculptures) and Jakob Rauch (stucco). The altar sculptures are considered masterpieces of German sculpture of the 18th century, the church itself as one of the purest and most precious Rococo buildings in Bavaria. The church was built between 1759 and 1763.
