A cycling route starting in Gauting, Bavaria, Germany.

Overview

About this route

Great 'Eight' through the Five-Lakes Area

Right at the start of the tour, just behind Gauting in the direction of Weßling, the special charms of this wide loop unfold: green forests, gentle, endless hills, and lakes of all sizes and 'flavors' nestled in between. An absolute delight!

To keep the rising euphoria somewhat in check, it should also be mentioned that the 'hearty' traffic volume wants to enjoy large sections of the tour alongside the cyclists. As always in love, beauty unfortunately never belongs to one alone... And certainly not on weekends!

But back to the 'mission'. It first consists of a 'casual' hill hopping over Weßling and its accompanying body of water, and finally down the sloping plain over the Pilsensee (Cheers! So much fun must be had... ;-) towards Herrsching. Alongside the Starnberg faction, this section is probably the busiest, but those who wish can always divert to the good bike path next to the St2068.

Herrsching is called 'Am Ammersee', but at first, one does not notice this. Unless you make a small detour to the promenade - which is also highly recommended.

Then, for the most part, it continues near the shore heading south, with the lake always in a quiet 'suspicion'. Once out of the enduring woodland section, one of the most beautiful stretches on this route begins in front of Aidenried. Silence, rolling, enjoying, or vice versa. But it’s best in the late afternoon or evening, when the sun is already lower in the sky.

Through Pähl and Fischen, one revels and crosses a melancholic landscape of swamps and bogs, until finally in Dießen one has 'solid' ground under the wheels again.

The St2056 towards the north offers another breeze of traffic, but quickly moves forward with only slight inclines.

Shortly before Holzhausen, it is best to take a small detour towards the shore (signpost to 'Dampfersteg'). The little quiet road is a beautiful, impressive respite and merges again after the lively camping area into Utting on the 'untamed' St2056.

One must remain faithful to Schöndorf until Greifenberg, before a calm, beautiful bike path once again tempts to the spa of Stegen.

Inning am Ammersee must first be conquered somewhat painfully in the mountain storm, and up there, there is naturally no trace of 'by the lake'. Through Buch, Breitbrunn, and Ried, one finally descends down to Herrsching after lightly exhausting hill waves.

A circumstance that already painfully recalls the steepest ascent of the entire tour up to Frieding and Drößling. The high plain over to Perchting is relatively calm, but not so varied in scenery.

However, following the rapid descent through Söcking down to Starnberg, with the Würmtal near Leutstetten for the finale, there is still a special treat. On a winding route, one goes on a gentle incline through the cool, shady valley.

Soon the forest thins, and the deforested island of Gauting appears like a gracious mirage before the tired gaze of the cyclist.

It is accomplished! The Great 'Eight' is written, and the Five-Lakes Area is experienced in an extremely enjoyable and 'endless' way...
