Szarvas - Békésszentandrás kirándulós

A cycling route starting in Szarvas, Bekes County, Hungary.

Overview

About this route

I am writing this route description because those visiting the area, even with children, can cycle it and this loop contains the most sights. There aren’t many road sections, and the few that exist are on the bank where drivers are more careful, given the single lane.

The suggested stops starting from Szarvas:

• Historical memorial path. It starts from the beginning of the recreational promenade and goes along the dam to the middle of old Hungary, but it is better to cycle on the left side on Malom street.

• At the old Hungary midpoint, you can refresh yourself at Vasmacska or at Tuja Klub which is 200 m away.

• Approximately 2 km on gravel road, after a few hundred meters on dirt road, we turn left towards the Élő-Körös dam. There is also a dirt road on the living dam, but of better quality, yellow earth. After about 600 m, we turn right, taking the ferry across to the other side, where at Rév Büfé, there is again a refreshment opportunity. Tip: you have to tell the ferry operator that 'we are just going to the bufé and we will pay on the way back'. Generally, they waive the fare; I suppose it’s already arranged with the búfé owner; otherwise, it’s 300 round-trip per person by bike.

• After returning with the ferry to this side of the river, it’s about 2 km to the weir.

• After the weir, we continue along the living dam - here on gravel road - arriving at the western end of Békésszentandrás. Here (especially with children) it is advisable to proceed very carefully on the sidewalk (even pushing), since the bike path on the other side starts only about 200 m away and is practically impassable. An alternative could be Hunyadi street, which runs parallel to the main road 44, but also be careful there, as its asphalt quality is like a gravel road with huge potholes, practically continuous. This is not the prettiest part of the municipality, but with detours, the route can be made more colorful; I recommend it for safety reasons, as there aren’t many cars driving through here due to the potholes.

• At the end of Hunyadi street, you can already see the bay of the water sports center where it’s also worth stopping for a brief break. Well-maintained park, boat rental and kayak rental available, sandy beach, bufé, WC.

• Returning to the bike path that runs parallel to road 44, after crossing the Szentandrás bridge, we can expect an acceptable quality, shaded by trees, to have a calm descent to Szarvas. In Szarvas, after the sports field, we return through the Erzsébet-liget.

This route can be completed in 2 hours even with less experienced cyclists. Friends have been visiting us for a long time for large group parties. After several years, after I took them on this loop, they were amazed and outraged why we hadn’t been to such places before. I can only recommend it.
