For a long time, it was an underdeveloped area where smallhold farmers struggled to make a living on the wild heath. Gradually the seemingly untamable plain disappeared, and what remains is now cherished. On marshy grounds grows round sundew and star sedge also thrives well. The delicate green flowers of the marsh cinquefoil are visible, and on the banks of the streams grows sweet gale shrubs. The cattle are a nice touch: they roam the area as natural lawnmowers, preventing the heath from becoming overgrown. Inn Brewery De Gouden Leeuw Vessem is the perfect base for the bike trip. It’s lovely to enjoy a cozy meal after your ride, sampling the freshly brewed beers and immersing yourself in the friendly atmosphere. Staying overnight here is also pleasant: the next day you can set out refreshed and cheerful again into the Kempen.
