The first part of this itinerary winds along the slopes of one of the heights sadly famous for the battles and human losses that unfortunately marked the territory of Gorizia during the world conflict of 1915-18: Monte Calvario-Podgora. On its summit, several plaques and monuments testify to those dramatic events. While the first part of the route is traveled almost surrounded by a lush vegetation of chestnuts, robinia, alder, oak, the second part opens up and the Collio hills accompany us in our effort, covered with neatly ordered rows of vines whose fruits are used to produce (among) the best white wines in Italy (or the world?).
