Leséchelles en de Crêtes de Frahan

This route combines some of the most beautiful and adventurous paths in Belgium. In addition to the well-known 'laddertjeswandeling' (Les échelles), it also climbs the rocky outcrop above Frahan. Besides these two well-known spots, you will also visit Poupehan with some beautiful views, the village of Frahan by the Semois with the pedestrian bridge, as well as a very beautiful path along the banks of the Semois just before the big climb to Rochehaut. Attention! This route contains some ladders and is therefore not suitable for people with a fear of heights. Route description: The route starts in the village of Rochehaut, and a parking lot can be found at the viewpoint at the edge of the village. The first part of the trip follows the grand route (GR14) and the hiking marker number 84. Once at the Semois, we leave the grand route and continue to follow the 84, which will take you to the ladders. Once you’ve survived the ladders, you emerge onto a larger path that you follow to the left in the direction of Poupehan, you may ignore the side paths here until you come out above Poupehan and you descend left towards the center and the bridge over the Semois. Across the bridge, there is a cafeteria where you can recharge, because the journey continues with a short but steep climb to the cross that sits a bit higher. The path runs along the ridge of the hill and brings you to the hairpin bend of the N893. You cross this and follow the other asphalt road until you see a path on the left. You take this path and turn right at the next one (so not over the stream). The Crêtes de Frahan are already marked here with wooden signs and the path also returns to the grand route which you follow to Arahan. After walking through the village center, we head toward the Semois where we can enjoy a terrace for a moment before the climb to Rochehaut begins. We then cross the pedestrian bridge and take the lowest path on the left; in short, we do not take the wide path to Rochehaut but take a narrow path along the bank of the Semois. This less-used path takes you through a very beautiful piece of nature and makes it a bit more challenging than a wide path. A little further on, at a cave for bats where there used to be a slate quarry, we go right up the hill for a short but strong climb to Rochehaut, from where we started.
