Overview

About this route

From Szarvas, we arrive in Orosháza along a little-trafficked and well-paved, tree-lined road, passing through Nagyszénás. Here, we head towards Szentes at a traffic light intersection functioning as one of the city's centers, using a hard-to-follow bike path. There are definitely shortcut options, but I played it safe. We cross Gyopárosfürdő and Rákóczitelepet on the best bike paths I have ridden. They are wide, undamaged, show no signs of dilation, freshly painted lines, perfect. If all were like this, I would not avoid them intentionally. At the end of the bike path, a very beautiful landscape follows. Marshy, hilly, not very busy. In Nagymágocs, we can celebrate the halfway point; I recommend the roadside hamburger stand, friendly service, and good prices. There is a very nice Károlyi Castle here, and the village itself is charming and has a long history. Here I made a mistake, as I should have gone to Szentes along the road next to the castle, but I ended up on the road heading toward Derekegyház and came out to the main road 45, which I didn't want. Very pothole-filled, huge traffic. I recommend approaching Szentes from the direction of Lapistó. In this case, at least I crossed Derekegyház for the first time in my life, where even the fence is made of EU project signs. A lot of infrastructure developments can be seen. With the money for the signs, they could have fixed two more villages, but that’s how it goes in Brussels. I really like Szentes with its winding streets; you can also wander and sightsee here. Heading toward Szarvas, we leave the city on a wide bike path, then on a long stretch along the main road 45, passing by huge thermal treatment ponds. If we survive this (you don't have to be too scared), turning toward Szarvas we'll tackle the last 28 km with winding sections alternating between open plains and wooded areas. It's a rather deserted route, often with headwinds, it's worth stocking up on water. After Kajánújfalu, we see a church ruin 100 m from the road, as indicated by a sign. We pass by Cserebökény, with a road leading through beautiful meadows and ancient grasslands. A refreshing experience in the sunflower-filled plains. I recommend approaching Szarvas along the dam; there is a gravel road all the way, and aside from the wastewater treatment plant, this section is nicer than reaching the city center via the Szentes road. On the dam, we ride between orchards and weekend plots. Upon seeing the Holt-Körös, we have entered the urban area; at the curve, we are greeted by the impressive building of the water stage and the sight of the new bridge. Given the length of the tour, thorough preparation and time are required; expect to bike for 4-8 hours, and it is strongly recommended to use a road bike. Due to the proportional distribution of the settlements, there are many opportunities for rest and refreshment.
