Gironde Cycle Tour

A big, mostly flat loop around the Gironde in southwest France, linking Bordeaux, the Médoc vineyards, the Gironde estuary, and the Atlantic coast. Expect a well-signed route of roughly 480 km that you can start anywhere (Bordeaux is an easy hub by train).

Riding is smooth for the most part: it’s largely paved and asphalt, with long stretches on dedicated cycleways and quiet backroads. You’ll hit the odd bit of gravel or cobbles and some short tracks, but nothing a touring bike can’t handle. Highlights include the riverfront in Bordeaux, pine forests, beaches and dunes by the ocean, and oyster ports around Arcachon Bay. On the estuary, ferries may be part of the plan—check timetables, especially outside summer.

Good in either direction. Wind can be a factor along the coast, and summer gets busy near the beaches. Great for multi-day touring, with plenty of places to eat and stay. Bring lights for shaded forest paths and enjoy the mix of city, vines, water, and sea air.
