Lower Engadine: Susch–Martina
A collection of 4 cycling routes.A classic Lower Engadine traverse along the Inn River from Susch to Martina, right on the Austrian border. Expect a mellow valley flow broken up by punchy climbs to terraced Romansh villages like Lavin, Guarda/Ardez, and the Scuol–Tarasp area. Think sgraffito-painted houses, castle views (hello Tarasp), wooden bridges, and big alpine scenery.
Surface is a real mix: plenty of gravel and unpaved tracks with stretches of quiet road and the odd busy section—perfect for a gravel or trekking bike; doable on an MTB. Road bikes with skinny tires won’t love the rough bits.
Best ridden west to east for a subtle net drop, though you’ll still rack up some climbing. Summer to early autumn is prime; spring can be chilly in the shade, and winter brings snow. Water fountains are common in villages, and there are bakeries and cafés most of the way.
Logistics are easy: the RhB railway and PostBus serve the valley (stops in Susch, Lavin, Ardez, Scuol-Tarasp, and more), so you can shorten or split the ride. In Martina you can connect toward Austria’s Inn cycle route.
Highlights: riverside gravel, castle views, spa town vibes in Scuol, and that wide-open Engadine light. Pack layers, lights for short road bits, and enjoy the flow between river flats and balcony villages.
