Wonderful ride with plenty of gorgeous scenery on all low traffic roads, aside from when getting close to and entering Le Puy-en-Velay.
We'd originally been planning to use N102, which we'd ridden on in the past, but when we hit it, the amount of high-speed traffic made us reconsider. So, we rode south a bit (actually descended a bunch) to get to D590, which was a perfect low-traffic road leading all the way into Le Puy-en-Velay. The climbing seemed interminal, but it was a pleasure to be riding on this road rather than on N102.
We highly recommend this route.
On a historical note, the route took us through Chavaniac-Lafayette. The cover photo is of the Château de Chavaniac, located in the commune, which was the birthplace of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette in 1757.
