Overview
The Spa Route connects the unique Westphalian spa triangle: the spa towns of Bad Sassendorf and Bad Westernkotten, located near the Hellweg, with Bad Waldliesborn, north of Lippstadt on the other side of the River Lippe. The cycle route forms a triangle and can be ridden as a 'circular tour' or as individual sections from one spa town to the next. It is part of a NordicAktivPark operated by the spa towns. The route runs along rural, scenic minor roads in the Hellweg and Lippe valleys. Near Lippstadt, the Lippe is crossed via attractive cycle paths and minor roads through the Lippe floodplains. From there, near Bad Waldliesborn, the route enters the beginning of the 'Münsterland park landscape'. Idyllic villages, interesting country inns and, above all, the spa towns themselves along the route, with their parks, salt works, brine spas, bathing and health facilities, as well as their restaurants, invite you to take a break and linger. The Hellweg Radio Spa Route is signposted in both directions with the logo shown above, so it can be ridden in different directions. Route: Bad Sassendorf – Bad Westernkotten (18.2 km) The route starts in the centre of Bad Sassendorf. From here, it heads east, parallel to the Hellweg, passing through Bad Sassendorf, Lohne and Schallern to Schmerlecke. It then continues via Völlinghausen and Erwitte to Bad Westernkotten. Bad Westernkotten – Bad Waldliesborn (10.9 km) This short section heads north to the town of Lippstadt. After crossing the Lippe and the Boker Canal, an old drainage canal in the former marsh and peatland area of Lipperbruch, you eventually reach Bad Waldliesborn. Bad Waldliesborn – Bad Sassendorf (25.4 km) From Bad Waldliesborn, the route now heads south-west back to the starting point at Bad Sassendorf. Following the Glenne, a tributary of the Lippe, and the Boker Canal, you reach Lippstadt-Cappel, a district of Lippstadt with a distinctly rural character. The route then runs south through Hellinghausen and Benninghausen, via Lohe, Wiggeringhausen and Merklinghausen to Schallern, before returning to the spa town of Bad Sassendorf.
