Day 6

July 11 (Friday) Today we have another quite long day, but almost all flat – like the Netherlands, as Bikemap says! Also, the first part is optional.  First part: optional – for the crazy ones. Leaving the town towards Aguilar de Campoo, we follow the Ebro. The road takes us to some very pretty villages with a peaceful atmosphere and little traffic, which is nice. We will reach Villanueva de la Nía, turn around, and return to Polientes.  Leaving the town towards Rurrero. In that town, we follow the CA 275 towards Orbaneja de Castillo. Just 3 km to the right we go up to the superb Romanesque collegiate church of San Martín de Elines, one of the most recurring icons of the entire Valle de Valderredible. From the small urban center of Arroyuelos and through narrow local roads, it's possible to reach Presillas de Bricia in a few minutes: a small almost uninhabited locality already belonging to the province of Burgos, whose geographical limits penetrate like a bite into the Cantabrian lands of Valderredible. The church of San Miguel, about a kilometer from the modest urban center of Presillas, is undoubtedly the most spectacular exterior of all churches. We go down again and, crossing the main road, go up to the small town of Arroyuelos. The rock church, dedicated to the Cordoban martyr saints Acisclo and Victoria, is located on the outskirts of the town, on a small elevation from which you can perfectly see both the collegiate church of Elines and a large part of the Cantabrian bank of the Ebro. We go down and get back on the road and on the left we pass another modest but charming church of San Cipriano. It is located right at the edge of the road. We have finished with the rock and Romanesque churches and are going to start with the waterfalls. It is not the best time of year to see them but we have no choice. First, we are going to visit El Tobazo, which is between Villaescusa and Orbaneja. Crossing the bridge to enter the town of Villaescusa de Ebro, you have to take the GR 99 towards Orbaneja. After lunch, we continue the path to Orbaneja or even to Quintanilla Escalada. Then, taking the N 623 towards Burgos, we go to Covanera; there it is worth visiting the Poza Azul. You have to cross the Rudron river and go down a few hundred meters and leave the bikes there where a small path leads to the pool. Collecting the brave vehicles, we turn left towards Sedano. There we leave the town on the right and shortly after again to the right towards Mozuelos.
