Rund Maria Laach

Sights: Tumulus of Nickenich (grave from the Roman times), Erlenbrunnen (willow spring), wetland of Thür Starting points: Parking lot at the Tumulus in Nickenich, train station Kruft.

This circular tour around the nature reserve Maria Laach is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful bike routes in the Osteifel. On one hand, the vast majority of the route consists of paved agricultural paths, away from traffic roads. On the other hand, long stretches south of Maria Laach run through the eastern Maifeld without significant inclines. The route passes through quite different landscape zones. From the dense beech forest in the northeast of Maria Laach, across extensive cultivated areas in the western part, along a cool stream valley in the southwest, to a wet, occasionally marshy plain in the south.

For the starting point, I have chosen the Parking lot at the Tumulus in Nickenich for all those arriving by car. A second option is the train station in Kruft, for those who wish to arrive by train.
