Thematic Reference

Although shaped by massive rivers in prehistoric times, the Urdonautal is today a dry valley. This does not detract from its beauty and variety. Framed by the Danube, Schutter and Altmühl, the Urdonautal is a stark beauty with southern grace. The communities of Dollnstein, Wellheim, Nassenfels, and Egweil together present the geological history and the Roman past.

 

Route Description

From Eichstätt, the route follows the Altmühltal bike path along prominent rock faces and impressive landscape elements to Dollnstein with its picturesque medieval market wall. In Dollnstein, the route continues along Burgsteinweg, Im Trockental, and Beixenhardstraße, following the Urdonautalradweg towards Wellheim. Approximately 3 km west of Wellheim, the Urdonautal is left behind and the course of the Schutter is followed through Meilenhofen and Zell a.d. Speck. From Nassenfels, the Schutterradweg continues through Wolkertshofen, Buxheim, Pettenhofen, Mühlhausen, and Dünzlau towards Ingolstadt until reaching Ochsenmühlstraße. Following this to the left brings you to Gaimersheim via Gerolfinger Weg. From here, the route goes through Böhmfeld, Hofstetten, past Pfünz with its Roman history back to Eichstätt.

 

Route Profile

The route mainly follows fine gravel paths and has no excessive inclines. Along the rivers, the path is mostly flat.
