Bikepacking from Villach to Grado

This epic cycling route takes you from the Austrian town of Villach all the way down to the sunny shores of Grado in Italy—a true adventure across borders! Villach, nestled in the heart of Carinthia and famous for its Alpine scenery and relaxed vibe, is your starting point. Soon, you’ll pedal southward, following mostly smooth paved cycleways (over half the ride!) through valleys and charming Austrian villages.

Prepare for some elevation gain as you cross the Julian Alps—don’t worry, for every climb there’s a rewarding descent, and you’ll eventually drop down from the mountains toward the coastal plains of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The terrain transitions from Alpine vistas to flat wetlands as you approach Grado, a picturesque lagoon town known for its historic old center and sandy beaches. With around 192 km (bring snacks!), this mostly paved journey offers a bit of everything: mountain air, riverside stretches, and at the finish, the salty breeze of the Adriatic.
